French lavender is lovely – richly fragrant, beautifully coloured and evocative of a hot Provençal summer – swathes of purple fields blooming against a spotless blue summer sky, the sound of the cicada and a warm breeze……and that’s exactly why it’s one of my favourite French soap scents.
The main lavender fields of Provence are set around the Luberon and Verdon plateau regions to the north of Aix-en-Provence and Marseille, and to the east of Avignon, with the flowering season in the lowlands being generally from mid-June to mid-July.
Les fêtes de la lavande
The French are rightfully proud of their lavender and celebrate the harvest in several villages and towns with festivals well worth a visit. The town of Valesole hosts possibly the most famous Lavender festival on the third Sunday of July every year, whilst Sault celebrates on August 15th each year.
The spa town of Digne-les-Bains in Haute Provence, to the north east of Valensole, celebrates for a full five days with its own popular festival called the ‘Corso of Lavender’ from the end of July until the first week of August.
Le Musée de la lavande - Cabrières d'Avignon
For real lavender enthusiasts there is the Musée de la lavande situated in the charming dry stone village of Cabrières d’Avignon. You’ll find lots of information about the industry – the planting, harvesting and distillation of lavender - both past and present here.
Notre-Dame de Sénanque

Notre-Dame de Sénanque is another must see in Provence in lavender season. It is a Cistercian abbey – and a fully functioning Monastery - near the spectacular hilltop village of Gordes in Vaucluse-en-Provence. The Abbey was founded in 1148 by Cistercian monks and is situated in a beautiful valley, surrounded by acres and acres of lovely lavender.
Although some of these events sadly won’t be taking place this year, at least not with the same sort of ceremony as usual, they are certainly worth a visit next year or at some point in the future.
