Chèvrefeuille - aka Honeysuckle

Did you know that there are over one hundred and eighty different types of Honeysuckle? You can even get a different type of Honeysuckle to flower for every season – year round beautifully scented flowers, what could be better?

Floral symbolism: Le Langage Des Fleurs

In 1819 Madame Charlotte de la Tour published a book on floral symbolism in French ‘Le Langage Des Fleurs’. According to this grand oeuvre, honeysuckle represented being "united in love" and devotion – largely due to the flower's clinging nature.

Good luck and prosperity

Honeysuckle has often featured in folklore and has slightly different symbolism in different countries. In Scotland for example, growing honeysuckle was said to bring good luck whilst protecting the home from evil. Fetching honeysuckle flowers into the home was also thought to bring prosperity.

During the Victorian era, suitors gave honeysuckle flowers as a promise of true love. Amongst the French, giving honeysuckle to a partner represented generous love, and in China dreaming of honeysuckle was said to symbolise passion in love.

Happiness, sweetness and devotion

According to the Flower Society, the predominant modern sentiment attached to honeysuckle has changed from ancient times. Today, a gift of honeysuckle simply represents an expression of pure happiness, sweetness and devotion.

The sweet scent of the honeysuckle

The scent is gorgeous - sweet, so sweet it attracts the beautiful hummingbird along with those crucial bees and butterflies. We love it so much we gave the name to one of our daughters – she is Lola Honeysuckle!
