In France Mother’s Day is a late Spring/early Summer affair, as it always falls on the last Sunday of May – unless this coincides with ‘La Pentecôte’ and then it gets moved to the first Sunday in June. This year in France it falls on the 30th May, whilst In the UK Mother’s day is on Sunday the 14th of March. The season of daffodils and tulips and all the loveliness of Spring.

My first ever proper surprise Mother’s Day gift to my mum was a pink and purple tie dye tray cloth I made at Primary school when I was 9 years old. There would of course have been others in previous years, purchased by my dad or made at home – but this was a big surprise made in secret, and one that I was hugely proud of. It unfortunately also led to a monumental telling off that I still remember today for being late home from school (as I hurriedly finished it off at the end of class). As a mother myself now I can completely understand my mum’s worry, as she stood at the window anxiously looking out for my blue coat coming up the road, plaits and school bag swinging.
I’m sure all mums love the home made cards and gifts made by lovely little hands the best, but these days my mum always receives some French soap along with her card and flowers. If you are looking for a really nice Mother’s day treat, the ‘Maman’ soap (white in colour) smells wonderful – it’s one of my absolute favourite French soaps and would be sure to please.

Choose any four French soaps, have them gift wrapped, with a French card enclosed and sealed with a pretty ribbon. A lovely way to say thank you to Mum, Nan, Gran, or Stepmum for all those clothes washed, meals cooked, stories, cuddles, helpful advice, homework help and all the rest…..
